Canberra Airport has once again solidified its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by achieving the highest possible rating of six stars under the Green Star Design & As Built certification for its base building at 25 Catalina Drive, Majura Park. This is the first time the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has awarded the prestigious Design & As Built rating to a building in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

The exceptional six-star Green Star rating of the Majura Park building is a testament to the myriad of sustainable features integrated throughout its design and construction and represents world leadership in sustainable design. Key elements include a fully electric building, a thoughtfully designed façade with sun blades, landscaping incorporating native species, roof-mounted solar arrays and a meticulously planned end-of-trip facility complete with cycle racks and shower/change room amenities. The existing Majura Precinct design, encompassing bus services, bike paths, verdant landscapes, and open spaces, has also played a significant role. Moreover, our ongoing recycling arrangements and composting programs have contributed substantially to achieving this world-leading environmental performance.

“Our green star journey began in 2005 when we were awarded Australia’s first Five Star Green Star rating for our 8 Brindabella Circuit project,” said Richard Snow, Head of Property at Canberra Airport. “Being a member of the Green Building Council of Australia for 20 years, innovation and environmental sustainability are deeply ingrained in our DNA.”

“Canberra Airport’s sustainability story began with Australia’s first Green Star certified building almost 20 years ago and today it continues with the 6 Star Green Star certification of the Marjura Park building, representing world leadership,” said Davina Rooney, CEO, GBCA.

“This benchmark breaking building is the first of its kind in Canberra; it is all-electric, powered by renewables, well connected with bike paths and transport, and within beautiful surrounds. This is a building Green Building Council of Australia is proud of and one the people of Canberra should be proud of too,” said Ms Rooney.

The GBCA has confirmed that Canberra Airport achieved every targeted point, surpassing the requirements for a six-star rating by an impressive 12 points. “This outstanding accomplishment reflects the dedication and collaboration of our team and our valued partners, including GMB Architecture, Construction Control, Acor Rudds Consulting and Viridis Sustainability consultants.” Said Mr Snow.

By attaining the six-star Green Star rating, Canberra Airport has once again demonstrated its leadership in sustainable building practices and its ongoing commitment to minimising its environmental impact. This achievement further solidifies Canberra Airport’s position as a frontrunner in sustainable development within the ACT and beyond.
